Mahishashurmardini
This illustration is inspired by the terracotta temple plaques of Guptipara. It shows Devi Durga at the center, defeating Mahishasura. She is surrounded by her children—Lakshmi, Saraswati, Ganesha, and Kartick—as seen in Bengali tradition.
The composition blends temple art with motifs from Alpana, Bengal’s ritual floor art. The original plaque that inspired this work is partially damaged due to weathering. I based my drawing on the figures that are still visible. Despite the erosion, they carry a strong presence. This artwork is my way of preserving and reimagining that fading visual story.
Here are some process sketches.
